What can I do to make my boat go faster?

I have a 1440 jon boat that I use for fishing and duck hunting. It has a 9.8hp motor with factory prop. With just myself in it (175#) and some duck decoys, it will go about 15 mph at WOT. I had my 225# hunting buddy in the boat with me and we were crawling at 8 mph. I'd like to go at least 12 mph.

What can I do to make the boat go faster? Will a jackplate make that much of a difference? Will a 15hp motor get me the speed I need? Any other ideas?

Generally more HP is a better thing. You may want to look in to prop pitch. What is the boat rated for HP wise?

What brand motor do you have? You might try a higher octane gas and a higher pitch prop.

higher octane than specified by the manufacturer will COST you power

Get a tinytach or similar on ebay and find out what rpm you are running at WOT both alone and with your buddy and find out what pitch prop you are running

Make sure your motor is running as good as it possibly can.... check timing and compression and check spark plug color after a WOT run.. IE chop throttle, kill engine, and remove plugs right then and there without idling engine first... should be light brown

come back with that info and we'll go from there

Higher octane fuel is harder to ignite to resist detonation and as such can actually burn a little slower... it may not actually cost hp but definitely won't gain hp unless you increase the compression ratio and or advance the timing at the same time

One thing nobody's mentioned yet is to play around with weight distribution.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that going up to 15 hp will make a sizable improvement. With your boat heavily loaded you're probably teetering right on the edge of planing and not planing, 50% more power would quite possibly put you over the edge.

Yep, higher octane fuel will slow you down except for how much lighter your boat is with less in your wallet.
This might help, but then it might sink the boat...

MIGHT?????

I'd be surprised if that boat could handle a 557 laying flat in the bottom as cargo LOL

He did sit in the middle bench with most of the load in the bow. Would trimming the motor up to get the bow higher work? When going 8 mph the boat was plowing thru the water.

The boat is rated to 20hp.

usually trimming down is what you need when low on power

if your motor and prop turn out to be right then upping hp will be the slam dunk you need...

15 or 20 hp would be night and day

+1. When in doubt.....POWER! You plus a 225# buddy and hunting gear is quite a lot for that little motor to push. A nice 15-20hp with a 4 blade prop would make a huge difference. Even if your top speed doesn't improve much, your ability to get on plane at lower speeds/throttle should improve greatly. Kind of like a truck vs. a prius, they can both tow a trailer, but the truck is going to have a much easier time doing so.

Nothing helps as much as weight and the proper prop pitch enabling the engine to run at it's rated WOT RPM. Little things to help would be to sand the bottom and file the prop and skeg if they are ruff. You need premium gas because you are working that engine hard. Run it at 40:1 if you don't troll. Cut a block of wood and space the engine a little higher on the transom but make sure it does not cavitate and starve for cooling water. Don't forget to fool with the trim as well. That's the pin under the engine that controls the amount of tilt when it's down. I just took my new to me boat from 28 to 34 by tinkering and I'm sure you can get that thing moving a little faster as well.

Re: What can I do to make my boat go faster?

There has been a thread or two like this before, where 1 person plus some gear is moved around nicely by a 10 hp +/- engine. . . Add that second person and the speed drops in half. The answer is almost always to get more horsepower, as the engine itself is doing all that it can and it is just out-matched by the additional weight.

If you want to move along quickly with 2-3 folks plus gear, go for the max that the boat is rated for . . . 20 hp.

Re: What can I do to make my boat go faster?

first, the factory prop is probably the right one. On a motor that small with a heavy load, the prop differences will be negligable and not worth the money.

All the other fine-tune suggestions aren't going to solve an 8 mph issue.

The only two things that will make a worth-while difference are HP and hull attitude. The first is solved with money; the second with weight distribution and motor angle, each of which adjusts hull attitude.

The goal is (a) to run flat and (b) to be on a plane. Some boats, you drop the bow to get up on a plane--the water pressure from digging in raises the bow. Others you drop the stern and let the water push the stern up. There are other tricks like running over shallow water to lift the boat.

for many boats getting on the plane (hole shot) and then trimming to stay on, or run best for conditions, requires adjustments by the PTT during the process; that's not an option for you, so you have to set the motor for best all-around, then adjust the hull attitude during the process by moving weight (people) around.

We used to have a 16' starcraft BR with a 55, no PTT so to get a skiier up once we got older, we'd send everyone to the bow on take-off then back once we were up. I have a 19' flat bottom skiff with a 50 and when loaded it can have a 3 minute hole shot but once it's up on a plane it slides along like a hockey puck. Takes all the tricks to get there.

I also have a jon boat like yours; the 15 will cure your problems. BTDT.

This apply s to all boats, you can fine tune what you have and it will help, however its still like driving a brick through the water, their is no substitute for horse power. Horse powers costs how much do you want to spend.

dont bring your buddy along.....

seriously, get a 15hp or 20hp outboard when you have 400# of people and about 100# of gear and fuel.

just curious, what is the weight limit of your 1440 john boat? many of the 1440's have a 450# people and gear limit and about a 700# total capacity (people, motor, fuel, gear, etc)

Also I absolutely agree with you, as I have done WAAAAY more fuel testing and engine computer work than I ever want to admit to, there is an * there... If you have a choice of premium without ethanol vs lower octane e10 fuel, the premium will possibly result in more horsepower. Depends on the carb of the engine, and how the mixture is set. E10 fuel will lean out an engine some, and possibly move it out of the best hp mixture range.
