Re: What can I do to my AQ131A ?

the good news is that the 275 drive is a good design, and can handle 200+hp, and parts are still available
I believe there is some interchangeability with other volvo drives.. like the 280 or 270.. even the 250 and 200, but not the 80, 100 or 100B

The bad news is :
1. your bellhousing. It is Volvo 4 banger specific. Volvo did put an inline six (3 liter I think?) in boats which may have the same bellhsg. But I seem to recall parts avail. is poor specifically exh. manifold.. people were quoted $2000

2. your outdrive ratio. It is geared to rev the engine high, and turn the prop slow. perfect for a heavy slow boat with a small engine. If you add more power by any means, you must at least increase prop pitch or the engine will over-rev, if you're already at a 19P or 21P prop, then you are pretty much in need of a different Volvo drive as you add power.

Best solutions:
a) look for a donor volvo powered boat with a bad hull... Volvo used 3.8 and 4.3 chevy V6 engines which would be nice in your 19'
b) sell boat and buy another boat

It should say "Only solutions:". Hopping up a motor of that size is a waist of money and time and I don't think you will ever notice what you did to it.

Just a thought, maybe a tune and some maintanance will give you a few more ponys.

My local boat shop has an affiliation with a local foundry, they will make bellhousings to couple VP to anything - for a price  .

Without changing gear ratios, bellhousings, exhaust systems, no there isn't much you can do. But..... You can repower by replacing everything. Transom shield, drive, engine the whole works. But get a complete system. Trying to piece together an engine drive package is hard to do for someone that really knows what they are doing. There are always minor (sometimes minor) problems that have to be worked around. But time is money, and having to make special parts is expensive and impractical for most people.
Boats and boating isn't cheap, never has been never will be. Boating cheap is known as working on it every spare moment for one 15 minute trip per year...... and getting towed in.

Now I am depressed but no time for that. I have to go install or fix something on the boat. I am hoping to get out one more time before the season is up. :D :D :D
Honestly, Don's words will work for all "classic" boats also ;) .
