Hi all,

I went over to a local marine shop yesterday because I heard he was fair and easy to deal with. Anyway, he had a 1975 50HP Evinrude sitting out in his shop for sale. He was asking between $550-$600 for the motor and controls. He said that a guy had it on his pontoon boat and wanted a bigger motor but that there was nothing wrong with the motor.

What can you tell me good/bad about this motor? Also, how is the price?

Shane

It was an excellent engine when new, Turtle, one of the best designs ever, but that was nearly 30 years ago.

If it has had good care it probably still is a good engine. If it has been neglected and abused you might need to spend some bux on it soon.

Decent price for a good one.

Good luck. :)

i have a 1970 40 h.p. evinrude,i am happy with it,, it starts & runs always, & i use it often, i have had carb problems, i would ask to hear it run, at low idle & at higher rpm's,,if it sounds good, chances are it will run for a long time,, most boat motors dont get used alot they spend alot of time setting,if it runs good it is worth it,,tad

Hi Turtle....maybe the dealer would give ya' some compression numbers, maybe a check of the ignition sys and a run to check out the engine temp and pump. May be a worthwhile pickup. As JB said, these were great engines.
