What Carbs for a 1987 2.4L 200 HP

I have a 200 V6 Merc with a bad EFI system. I'd like to swap it out for carbs as there are tons of used carb sets out there cheap. In the $75.00-$200.00 range for everything and reed plates.
HOWEVER... I can't find out what the correct carbs are for the motor as they are obsolete. Most of the used ones you find for sale say they are good for 150-200 HP but surely they are not the same carbs for a 150 as a 200?

Does anyone know what numbers should be on the carbs to keep it at 200 HP?

Your are correct as 150 carb are differnt than 200 carbs. Any of the following series carbs will work: WH-26,28,31,39,46... Best to find a complete engine to rob the parts off of as your going to need the following: throttle arm and linkages,carb linkage, front air box with upper/lower cowl brackets,carbs,intake manifold,and I cant remember if the trim solenoids will bolt back to air box due to bracket (flat or stepped).

Excellent! I found a set of 28's very cheap. I think this set has most of what I need

Will the Reed plate 96770 fit my engine?

Also I have the old style clamshell cowling. It is my understanding that the clamshell wont fit over the carbs breathers. Is there any real harm in running the engine without the plastic breather cover over the carbs? Maybe I can ever modify the efi cover

Yes that will fit but the only thing to chck for is if intake has been cross drilled as that one has paint stripped and factory fiber reeds. If cross drilled just have holes welded up. You cowling should work with the air box cover if it has the plastic strap lock, its the 150 cowl with the 2 cam locks that wont fit as cowling front is shorter..

There are 2 metal locks that hold the clamshell togeather in the front. And of course the cosmetic front plate. The motor is marked 200 on the plug. Did they put 150 cowlings on 200 EFI models?
Is there any harm in running the carbs under the cowling without the cover?

Something doesn't add up on tha cowls. If its got tha two latches it won't work on a 200 with tha air box on. Although they are tha same size tha 200 is cut different in tha front to make room for tha airbox and extra length of tha horizontal front of tha motor and will have tha single plastic latch Fb is refering to.............

I can do that but bear in mind its an EFI motor Im converting to carbs.

Tryin' ta remember. Think tha cowls might work 'cause tha ecu is flat (like tha 150 air box) where tha tha 200 air box has two "bumps" that extend past tha cowl openings. Dono. Lotsa burnt brain cells in this old noggin'.............But I do know that tha 200 front and air box will not work with tha two spring loaded latches....................

Running without the airbox cover will dramatically change the tuning and will likely lean out and kill the motor. I don't know if they're the same blocks, but I have '87 200 HP black max carbed motors with clamshell cowls. I can take some measurements if you need it. If you happen to be in the LA, Ca. area you can come look at mine.

Mine should be the same motor as yours in the EFI version. I'll go forward with Project. Find a breather etc and see if I can get it to work. If not I guess I can look for a cowl that will
