What CARS do you think will be a 'Future Classic'?

OK, it's cold outside and we need to entertain ourselves without our boats- at least for awhile.
Anyway, I watched some of the Barrett-Jackson footage over the Holidays and it got me thinking-
A lot of the cars they sold were not all that 'special' in their day and were considered normal, run-of-the-mill cars. Today they are highly desirable classics. Makes me wonder what modern cars might be good candidates for future stardom.
Yeah, I know that ANY old car that's been mothballed correctly with low mileage will one day be valuable. That's not what I'm looking for here. And modified cars don't count.

I guess what I mean is: What cars that can be (or were) bought at a dealership do you guys think will be highly collectible in 10- 20 years?
I've got a few in mind:
- Pontiac Solstice/ Saturn Sky
- Buick Reatta
- Ford Taurus SHO (early ones)
- BMW M Coupe
- Acura NSX
- Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited
(Alright- to be fair, I'm jaded- I have a 5.9 Limited. Only made 'em in 1998.)

What else 'ya got?

i don't know if any of the will make it for 20 years. 30 years in FL is considered and antique, by the DMV.

04/07 Scion Xb. I have one and love it. Lots of knock offs like the Soul, Cube, etc. so it will be a winner.

A couple of your cars on your list have a cult following and those folks will always want one of their models. The BMW "M" and Acura come to mind. Limited production will help those. For you, the Jeep....however, I don't see how any of those cars are going to demand more than their original sales price.
The Sky/Solstice are making way too many of them, and they are worth a ton less than sales price as soon as they are driven off a lot.
That leaves the Reatta and SHO. If I had to pick one or the other I would guess the Reatta. Lower production numbers, some desirable options and interiors to make it stand out will help. The SHO, well, its just a gussied up Taurus with a Yamaha designed motor that was also made in higher numbers than needed to make it unique. Just my .02....

you know i'm sure folks back in the day of '57 chevy's thought the same way i do today but, i just don't see how any car riddled with plastic gadgets and elec gizmos that are going to fail and cause great heartache will be considered collectible.

cars today are just not the same as they were. you can't become "attached" to your car like you used to. very few people can or do work on their own rides and even if you do, there comes a point when you need the little diag computer to help you find an elec gremlin.

i've done 95% of the work on my F150 so far. I've had it for 8 years and I tell you every time I think about the next breakage I can't help but pray that I'll still be able to figure it out and be able to get at it.

if i had to pick one though i would say my jeep wrangler. LOL

What about the limited production, '04 - '06 GTO's?

Re: What CARS do you think will be a 'Future Classic'?

I got a few, probably already considered classics by some.

1986-87 Buick Grand National/ 1987 Buick GNX

1989 Pontiac Turbo Trans Am

1991-92 GMC Cyclone

1992-94 GMC Typhoon

I have owned an 86 GN, and a 89 TTA.

I like the question, but would like to know what vehicles that are being manufactured today(2009-2010 model year) by the automakers that will turn into some of the sought after cars of tomorrow.

2010 Corvette ZR 1 should make that list, prob obvious though. Firehawks are fairly rare, might make them sought after. Though I'm biased as I own one.

What about the limited production, '04 - '06 GTO's?

I liked the new GTO,even though it didnt sell well. Wondering if it being produced by Holden and not Pontiac might affect its future desirability

Cars are produced in such large numbers today that it is hard to pick a future classic. Corvette Z06, ZR1, Dodge Vipers and European muscle ala V8 M3 and Audie S4's. Possibly perfomrance cars with rare options like Corvettes with the handling package and 6 speeds or Challenger RT with the stick too.

Jeep FC150 pickup.
Jeep Grand Wagoneer.
Ford Falcon Ranchero.
Ford Falcon Sprint.
Corvairs, mainly the Spyders.
Type II VW Westfalia campers.

Yeah, I know they are all already old.

Good responses. Sometimes a valuable car isn't necessarily the one everybody THINKS will be valuable. Fieros are a good example. Weren't they built on a Chevette platform?

That's a good one, and I think YES it does belong on the list!

How 'bout these: the mid-80's Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and the mid-70's Mercury Capri. Wonder if there's any really nice ones still around...

Re: What CARS do you think will be a 'Future Classic'?

I had a '79 Capri RS... mostly plastic and impossible to find parts for 20 years ago. Hard pressed to smoke a tire w/o modifications.

The mid-nineties Impala SS is already worth more than it was new.

Definitely the new GTO.

The 1987 Monte Carlo SS. One of my all time favorite cars. They're pricey now too.

Anything from the big 3 with SS, GT or RT behind it's name (& as long as it's well cared for) should be worth a lot.

I've got a flawless fully loaded 1999 3000GT (pearl white). I'm hoping it might be worth something someday, but it may not matter as my wife is emotionally attached and prolly won't sell it. :D

Re: What CARS do you think will be a 'Future Classic'?

How about a 76 50th Anniversary "Smokey and the Bandit" T/A ... oh wait, it already is .... selling at 4-5 times originaly MSRP (yea, I got one with 42,000 miles on her ... made 1800 of them).

Agree with the Fieros, but probably only the GT models.

I had a guy trade a '58 vette for a Turbo "Indy Pace Car" T/A. He even gave me a few dollars ... good deal on my part. The Vette has been sold at least 3 times since I sold it and last I knew it was converted to right hand drive and living in Malaysia.

It is so hard to say what WILL BE a classic. If we had that crystal ball we could go out and stock up on that car and make a mint in 15 - 20 years. However, fads, likes, and designs change so much that it is really the present that dictates what the past "classics" will be. I mean, who would have thought a 4 door 1963 Oldsmoble F-85 would be a classic? As a general rule, they are not, but I have one with 2500 miles on her (you read that correctly, no zeros were forgotten). My dad sold it to a mechanics wife right after the mechanic died (mechanic would NEVER let his wife own a new car and she wanted one). She would call us up to change the oil, inspect it, charge the battery, etc ... in short, we put ALL the miles on it. 15 years later she calls us and wants to know if we want it for $500! Tell her we will pay her more, but no, we have treated her so well and her daughter didn't want to drive 300 miles for a 15 year old car! Belts, hoses, tires are still original ... still paint on the engine. Yep, she is a classic, and have been offered a pretty penny for her, but as of yet, she is not for sale ... not until someone comes up with a high enough price.

So, what makes a classic? The eye of the person today. The sentiment of yesterday. It is not just limited production, but limited availablility. It is grace and style, or muscle and brute force ... as seen today, not when the car was built.

That is what makes it so hard to predict today what will be tomorrow's classics.
