What causes engin to jump out of gear

I have a 1964 johnson 60hp.Well I was out on the water today trying to get the carbs adjusted good..When I put it in forward gear and give it throttle it seemed as the engine was coming out of gear. It makes a load bang and seems like its coming in and out of gear .When I lowered the rpms to a crowl it was ok.What could be the problem?I also lost my prop and I didnt hit any rocks cause I was in 60 feet of water..I just put a new shear pin in this morning..Also I noticed that 2 of my 4 cylinders the plugs are wet..#1 and #4 what would cause this.These are different sides of the head to

Since youwere fussing with the carbs it sorta makes sense to start there. Start with adjusting the carbs per the procedure in a shop manual preferably the one put out by OMC.

I have had that happen to my 1963 40hp Evenrude, and it sounds like that is what has happened to yours....It was my cluch dog, and the correct adjustment to engage the cluch dog properly...Also, check your piviot pin, at least make sure it is still there.....Dan
