I am in the middle of adding a 5" extension kit to a late model Johnson 25hp 2 stroke. Going from 15" to 20". I see I will have to pull the powerhead to install the longer shift shaft. I want to make a 5" extension up out of another shift shaft and a coupler. The shaft is the same diameter as what is on a 9.9 johnson. I thought I could get a used upper shift shaft for a 1985 and later 25 hp, cut it down to 5" and use the brass two bolt connector like off a 9.9 or a 15 omc motor to join to the existing shift shaft and save pulling the power head. Anyone ever tried this? comments please

My neighbor tried it but made one of his cuts to short. So he had to start from scratch.

As IIfish suggests, measure twice, cut once! Otherwise this should work. As a carpenter friend of mine once said, "darn -- I cut this off twice and its still too short!"

took lower of of my 2004 25 short shaft and did a measure job. Adding a 5" extension to the existing shift shaft is not possible. The Joint of the two would hit just after the shift shaft goes through the hole in the water pump housing. If you put the motor in forward gear the joint connector would hit the underside of the water pump impeller plate. Well this only leaves pulling the powerhead to install the new longer shift shaft. doing it tomorrow.

well went and got a manual, removed the power head, changed out for the longer shift shaft put her back together with the rest of the 20" kit and now is complete. Fear of the unknown Never removed a power head before. Not so bad.
