Find the problem before you put the other pack on or you just might end up with the same thing.

Looks like a dead short. There's a CDI trouble shooting guide on here somewhere.

Re: What could cause this?

I have compared stator outputs to that of CDI tech docs, all is ok with the stator, however I don't know if the pack is dead on the right side or not, but the left side will fire with the stator coil indended for the right and the only connector damaged was the pack side! CDI will not honor a warrenty if I cut or modify the factory wires, but the female metel insert pin on the burnt connector is burnt out (not there anymore) how ever there is no other sign of heat stress to the wires or the bottom of the pack, the right bank would fire on occassion returning to dock, but it would be just brief fire, guessing it was due to an arc jump, I do remember when installing I removed the brown wires from the connector of the pack for some reason and may not have put them back in there original holes, I don't know if there is a polarity thing it's an A/C output and the engine has been run for several weeks with no issues, seems like this was a poor connecton in the CDI Connectors

Re: What could cause this?

I have had several connector problems with the CDI repacements ,I now check and pull each connection. When I went to the digital ignition on my Junkrude all the amphenal pins were crimped to tight and wires nearly cut into...

Re: What could cause this?

Bad connection, high resistance, to much heat from the voltage.
