I accidently mixed in 2 gallons of diesel in 5 gallons of 50-1 and ran it for about 3 miles before I drained it and replaced the spark plugs. The engine won't idle but starts fine now. Should I clean the carb or anything else?

Fresh clean fuel, clean carbs out, run the living daylights out of it to try to clean anything left out of it. Give it a good seafoaming. If it runs there is hope.

How the heck did you mix diesel with it ??? the smell alone should have set off the alarm bells !!!!

You probably didn't do any damage. Just get all of the diesel out of the motor - make sure everything is clean of it from the tank to the cylinders.

Can we assume there was no oil in the diesel? Ouch. I don't know if the diesel is oily enough be itself. Never tried it.

If you drain and flush the fuel system (with 50:1 gas mix), that should be good enough. I see no reason to tear into the carburetors. Just remove the drain plugs.

I had a GAS jug sitting around and I had forgotten about using it for diesel. I just screwed up. The smell wasn't that bad. But I thought something was funny about how it didn't evaoproate right when a litttle bit spilled. Thanks for the help. Now, about my other Johnson, its' a FICHT and ....:D

There is a bit of lubricating quality to diesel so you probably did not do any damage to the engine. Bit off the subject. Worked at an FBO before I retired. Fueler topped off a piston engineed twin with jet-a ( kearousine) on top of 100 low lead. Taxi out, engines would not hit T/O power. No noticable damage but the engine mfg. insisted the plane not be flown. Operator or insu. co. had to pay for 2 extreamly expensive air cooled flat 6s. Understandably, kid lost his job, he insisted he did not do it. FRED

Lubrication should'nt be a problem with your 115. Once the engine picked up fresh fuel, it should just return to normal, probably would'nt need the new plugs. My son once did that with his car, you could'nt see across the street for the smoke.

I'm sure you didn't harm your engine, and once you run some good fuel through it, it will probably run fine.

Just as a note: OMC made a line of outboards that ran on kerosene. About the only difference was a thicker head gasket to lower the compression. According to something I read online, folks used to start them with gas/oil mix, then switch over to the kerosene when they were warmed up.

Someone posted a question about one of those kerosene Johnsons some time back here.

Yamaha is now the maker of most kerosene/diesel outboards, and they are used all over the Pacific.

Yea, thats an old indian trick. Believe it was HARVESTER or INGERSOLD-RAND that had a similar set up. Idea is to get the cyl. walls hot enough that they dont rob the heat from the compressed air so the fuel will ignite. Thicker gasket on the head compinsates for the lower octain of diesel, call c-tain. regards FRED

You guys were right. The engine is running fine(after new fuel and plugs) but it won't idle down. It's like the idle is set too low. We'll see if the Sea Foam does the trick.

You can take the air cover off and throttle it up to about 2500 and choke each carb with your hand (block off all air) for a few seconds each. This should suck out any residual diesel in the carbs and idle passages.
