Engine: 1987 140MCM (181 CID)
***Engine has sat for 10 years***

Situation: I was working on adjusting the carb and idle when the boat began to spew accrid smoke from the exhaust. Shut her down but found chunks of rubber in the water barrel after.

Afterthought was that I was not getting good cooling flow, although I had put in a new t-stat. Temp probably exceeded 180-190F after checking the temp gauge.

What might I have screwed up now? Any ideas? The pieces are assorted sizes from 1"x 1" to particles. Rubber boot? at bottom of outdrive appears intact from outside.

Much appreciated again.

sitting for 10 years most likely the riser/manifold is plugged solid. they may be pieces of the flapper assembly melted out from no water flow.

I've read your posts from friday,it was sugested that you remove engine from boat and go thru completly----after siting for 10 years it and the out drive are going to need alot more than you have done to it.

Re: What Did I Cook Off Now???

Time to pull the outdrive and install a new waterpump kit in the lower. Get all the pieces of the water shutter (flapper) out of the drive and install new gear oil. If it were mine I would at the very least do a vacuum and pressure check of the outdrive... Or just install a new upper and lower seal kit. Grease and check the gimble bearing and u-joints. Replace the water shutter. As was said... Ten years is a long time for those rubber parts. A leaking drive will cost you big bucks.

Re: What Did I Cook Off Now???

Thanks for the help guys. I have been trying to get out of this cheaply assuming I could do it on my own. I think continuing this way will cost me more in the end than the shop rate of $65/hr. Pulling the engine is way beyond me or my wallet I would guess.

So my list to the service shop is...

1) Finish cleaning carb and tune
2) New water pump kit in lower unit
3) Clean out old water shutter and install new one
4) Upper and lower Seal kit on outdrive
5) Grease and check gimble bearing and u-joints

Any other suggestions?
