What did I do to fry my ignition?

I have a 1977 Johnson 200 with the CD-1 ignition. I am replacing a 1985 Johnson 175 with this motor. I get the motor on the hull hook it up to the wiring harness. The motor fires up and is running fine I shut it down and began installing the external trim solenoid. I hook the positive and negative power supply cables from the trim unit to the starter solenoid under the engine cover and engine ground. Trim works great, but the motor does'nt get any spark! What did I screw up ? Is it because I used the power source at the engine for my trim unit instead of connecting them straight to the battery?

If you simply hooked up the PTT positive cable to the battery cable terminal of the starter solenoid, and the PTT negative ground cable to a powerhead ground, that is the same hook up as having the PTT cables connected directly to the battery and would be fine.

Are you saying now that the engine cranks over but actually has no spark to the spark plugs, OR are you saying that the engine simply does not crank over with the electric starter?

The engine cranks over, but there is no spark at any of the spark plugs. I tested for power on the engine side of the wire harness (after the big red connector inside the engine cover)but before the rectifier and was getting 12.5 volts. Just no spark.
