I have a 1998 40 horse Evinrude. I broke the drive shaft by hitting a rock. I bought a replacement drive shaft with the same part number. I had a person put it together but it doesn't shift properly. Is there a common problem in assembly that would account for this? Any idea what could be wrong? I have the factory manual and that didn't seem to be much help.

The shift rod may not have been connected properly or the shifter needs adjusting.

On this particular model, I do not have any manuals, but all that I have worked on prior, this is the most logical cause. If things change after it's been take apart and reassembled, these are the two first points one should check. Someone will probably chime in and give you a diagram. There are a lot of helpful guys here.

I am having a similar problem with my 40HP after replacing all the seals. The shifter rod threads in but who know how many turns or how to adjust it.

Do you have the OMC manual for your model? If so the shift rod height dimension should be in it.

Nope, I found the first problem. The bearing carrier on the drive shaft has a set of shims under it. They fit into a cavity in the bearing carrier, or should I say they should. I had a little bit of shims gone wild. You notice it when you turn the drive shaft. It feels really notchy and hard to turn. I drained the fluid, and pulled the output shaft carrier, and the shifter seal assembly, then notice it had to be the main shaft. It always the very last place you look! I should be able to through it together in the morning. You can also adjust the linkage where the cable attaches to the motor as well for fine tuning.

See ya on the water soon guys!
Oh sorry, that a west cost thing, the stripes are biting and the boned girls are out looking for dates! We got no snow out here and the weather is running in the 60s. If the wind stays down, we can troll to the cows come home! That would be about 4Pm when the kick our sorry a@ss off the lake.

It's done like this: **** into neutral.
Disconnect the shift lever on the starboard side.
Adjust the cable so that it properly stops in the detents.
Disconnect the shift shaft on the port side of the engine.
Reconnect the shift lever on the starboard side. Now look at the point where the the sift rod attaches to lever. If the hole lines up, you are good. If not, drop the lower unit and adjust the rod by turning it cw to lower or ccw to extend it as required. When the rod eye line up with the lever, install the screw and the balance of the hardware and give her a test.

Works for me.
