Hi everyone:

This is my first post to this site and I sure hope that someone more knowledgable can help us. We were replacing the starter motor on our Cobalt 18' with a Mercruiser 228 I/O during an unbelievable rain storm and as we were rushing things, forgot to disconnect the battery. Something arced, don't know what and now we have no power to the dash except the tilt. all leads leaving the battery are powered, but somewere in the engine compartment the power dies. Has anybody any idea what may have happened or where to begin looking? Thanks for any input.

Valuable lesson learned here, don't rush things!!!!

Should be a circuit breaker with a red button on the engine. Push it and see if it resets.
Check with a meter before and after, just to see if it actually works or not.

You might also have a fuse on the starter. It looks like a little box or cube that the cable from the battery attaches to.

Thanks so much for your replies. Have tried to reset the red button, but didn't help. Will the fuse for the starter stop all power to most everthing else?

Yes, if you have one. Depending on the year of engine you have (Which you forgot to mention) you may not even have one.
Get a test volt meter and actually test things to find out. There is nothing to see if it's blown.
