What do I have? Where to start?

Hello all! Here is a pic of a little motor I picked up at an auction about 2 years ago. THe motor has been in my basement since then. It says it's a Evinrude Sportsman. I don't know what the HP rating is though. The serial# is 4412-03724. That is the only # I can find anywhere on the thing.

THe motor has seen better days as you can tell but I think it would make a dandy trolling motor for my boat. My next question is where should I start with this motor to see if there's any life left in it? I can tell you that the prop turns when you turn the rope pull on the top.

Thanks in advance!

4412 is a 1946, 2hp. Same as any other motor, check compression, spark and fuel and repair as necessary. I'll look up the gas oil/mix and get back.

Re: What do I have? Where to start?

Thanks for all of the info all!! WHat kind of compression should this little guy have?

I can handle any mechanical stuff that the motor will need provided I can find parts. The carb on it has me a little scared though. I don't get along with carbs, never have never will! I've heard nothing but horror stories about carbs on outboards too.

Thanks again, I'm sure I'll be back.

They just don't come much simpler carbs than that one. The poppet valve is somewhat non-conventional though. The fuel goes through a tiny hole in the valve seat.

The compression on that little motor will probably be about 60 psi.much less than the usual 100 psi minimum we generally look for but it should be fine.It should be within 10% between cylinders.
