Re: what do i need?

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard kb,...

To "Test" the sending unit,...

Turn the key to On,..
Disconnect the wire screwed to the center post of the sending unit,+ Touch it to Ground...
The Gauge should Peg to Full...
Of course, the Ground path could also be an Issue, so it'll need Tested if the gauge Doesn't peg...
If you Do have a solid Ground,+ the gauge doesn't peg,...
Replace the Sending Unit...

Lots'a paintin' goin' on down in the Restoration forums,...
Stop on by,... See if We're doin' it Right or not,........;)

Re: what do i need?

Sir if i read your post correctly, the gauge works, but is not accurate.

Correct?

If correct i would first see if the wire connected to the sender is in some way corroded, and making good contact with the sender. Maybe its green and the wire is rusted underneath. You know how to fix that.

Then you may have to lay on your back but check the wire connection at the gauge for the same thing, green and rusted connection. Fix that one if you have to.

If it is still working but not accurate then maybe someone at some time took off the sender and spun it and it's not in the right position. Or hung up on something.

Try repositioning it in the hole.

Good luck, bet they can use some advice on painting, youngins think they know it all.
