what do the 2 driveshaft o rings seal?

i am re -installing my outdrive-87 cobra, and noticed the 2 new o-rings that came with the gasket kit seemed much smaller than what is on the shaft now. i know they will stretch but doesn't seem like they should have to that much-what do they seal anyway and if the old ones appear in good condition, am i hurting anything by re-using the old ones?

They don't seal anything, they just put pressure on the inner race of the bearing so the bearing turns and not the shaft of the drive spinning on the shaft.
That's why you need to change those orings when you have the drive off for any reason.
