...ok, let's get the jokes out of the way first
"Time to get a new motor"
"Time to upgrade your anchor"

1985 Evinrude 25hp
I picked this up today as a parts motor for some labor trade and already have someone who needs the tiller, which is great since it's set up for controls so I'm not out anything. It still has a ton of other components I can use if needed.

It had apparently lost water flow and it overheated..big time. The owner said it "had no compression." For S&G's I took the [somehow] still in-tact, very brittle, head gasket off, put some soft tack gasket sealer on both sides of it and put the head back on (nothing to lose, I suppose, plus this soft tack stuff comes off pretty easily). Shot some 3 in 1 in the cylinders, rotated the flywheel a dozen turns (quite smooth turning) ran the compression with the starter and got 80/100. I stuck it in the tank and fired it up, it sneezed a bit but got to temp quickly and ran pretty well for almost a minute before I shut back down since it was starting to get pretty warm (still no water out the tell-tale). I shot the compression again and got 82/95. If it's the kind of thing that won't get worse once I fix the waterflow issue I was thinking of just holding onto it as a saltwater kicker instead of parting it out since my 9.9 isn't enough to punch through some of the currents.

So my question is, what is it called when this happens?

Re: What do you call this?

I've been searching for the place I've seen this before. I can't tell from his journal, though, what it's called and how he fixed it.

He seemed to have brought it back to life. I have worked on all but two aspects of outboards: lower unit gears, crankcase/pistons. So I'm willing to give it a shot if there is any point to it - beyond just the academic.

REALLY???

This isn't a Merc, Jimmbo. Whether you're right or not is inconsequential and I can't understand why you would have even bothered posting such an obtuse comment.

Well, with that response, I hesitate to give my opinion. But you did ask what it is called. I call it junk, but I'll be nice and say it is a parts motor. That cylinder is beyond repair. Aluminum expands more than steel when hot, and you see what that did.

Oh, you may patch it up and get it to run for a few hours, but the end result is the same. Just please don't patch it up and sell it to some poor sunsuspecting sucker, like so many do. The guy's kids may need milk money.

Re: What do you call this?

Thanks, FR. I just wanted a bit of explanation. I've seen some crazy stuff brought back to life that I would have never considered.

So I guess I've got myself a great parts motor, then! Well it sucks because I hate to see these motors die off. A guy on CL is posting one just like it "that runs great!" (but completely stripped AND has no lower unit) for $700. Maybe I'll see if I can pick it up for $150 or something and move the powerhead over. If not, there's a lot of really good parts here that are stupidly expensive to buy new (starter, powerpack, coils, carb...). The market is really too soft for 20-50hp motors to put any money into it for sale so I was just going to hang it on the back of my boat and chase salmon this fall anyway.

The sleeve has separated from the water jacket (block). If you measure the cylinder it will be oval shaped, not round. The motor will eat itself pretty soon.

Cylinder sleeve separation - that block is scrap. :(

Re: What do you call this?

Yeah...I'm resigned to that. I pulled the lower unit off today to get after the water pump and impeller. I want to make sure it's in good working order before I sell it (the lower unit) or hang it on another motor. I fired it back up today to check the water flow in the tank and got 100/110 compression. Of course, it wasn't in gear.
