Looking for a used boat in this size range, probably a bigger engine then I thought I would end up with. Any big things to look out for? I am not sure what totally rebuilt means and if that is good or bad. any help would be great. Looking at the picture it seems the helm is covering some sort of hatch. Link is below

115 seems like way too much motor for that boat and a boat that size; with the jack plate it's as if he was trying to make a bass boat without the sparkle paint.

No year given; the motor looks old.

"rebuilt" is very odd for that hull, unless he means the engine was rebuilt. I think I'm correct that it's a sealed hull like a whaler so nothing in there to rebuild unless there is some catastrophic damage--and then you wouldn't want to buy it.

Price seems high but there are a lot of factors, unknown to me, that go into price.

I assumed rebuilt meant the motor, but who knows. I find so many listing that do not give a year at all. My assumption is if they do not post a year, then it is old.

Those old Scout boats built a good reputation. It is one boat I'd rather have an older one than a new one. The size of the 115 indicates it may be original to the boat too. With that motor especially and a galvanized trailer around saltwater she is priced a little high, at least in my area.

a 1985 19ft cobia 180 sits here while I work the last of the bugs out of it, it came with the same jack plate. It was VERY common on boats of the 80's like this it seems. To tall for a short shaft, to short for a long shaft. They are fixed jack plates, you have to manually lift or lower the motor. The 115 might be a hair on the big side, mine is rated for a 120 but it's a different manufacturer and of course all bets are off when comparing.

Couple things I noticed.. Someone moved the center console placement. I highly doubt a manufacturer would cover a hatch like that. What ever is under that hatch is going to be hard to inspect/repair. it does not say Karavan on the trailer. it says first coast trailers.. Might be a Karavan, who knows? it does have the right look to it. It does look to be a saltwater johnson but make sure. If it's a fresh water motor that's been used in salt. well... fine tooth comb inspection time.

technically true. However, the saltwater line of johnson V4/V6's where different than what some would call a freshwater engine. I have never had a saltwater engine apart (I am in the middle of freshwater land) but I guess if I really wanted to there is a V6 johnson "saltwater" here I could look in. Thing is, it looks new under the hood and runs well.

its been said that "saltwater" engines can be anything from just paint and labels, to more corrosion protection in the housings and stainless fasteners.

I can tell you that the boat will ride rough in a chop. That boat is set up almost like a flats boat. That 115 is around a 1981-83 (great motors) and if I was shopping I wold be hunting for a "post 1985" (but never a FICHT ;))

Yah that set up isn't right if you ask me. Would you look at where you have to sit. OMG may as well have a bench seat on top of the motor cowl. Every last bit of weight in the boat is at the stern, no wonder a 115 on a 16 ft'er someone has put a hyrdofoil on the AV. That design is not very safe if you ask me. I wouldn't be a boat guy either if all boats had your butt hanging over the splashwell. My vote is for a no sale on that one.

Many CCs are like that, well the smaller ones at least. My neighbor has a 21' Cobia and there is little room to stand behind the leaning post. A 15' BW you just about need to use the leaning post when facing rear.

It is a bad camera angle making it look like seats are close to the motor.
it a good looking rig. $3500 would be a reasonable price.
I had a 760 lb aluminum hull boat with the same vintage 115 Evinrude. NOT OVER POWERD ! if you get 115psi on all 4 cylinders in a compresion test I would buy for $3500.;)
