I'm trying to take apart the lower unit on a 1990, 110 HP Evinrude.
I've already removed the bearing carrier, now onto the 2 snap rings.

As you make know, there are 2 large snap rings way down in there.
I purchase long reach snap ring pliers.
...regret spending that $42

as they come to a point, seems this allows the snap-ring to slip off and return to where it was.
I've tried many times with no luck.

What are you using to remove these?

Well, I was kind of hoping to find the correct (ish) tool to do it myself.

Farm Tool and Implement Stores often have Snap Ring Pliers.

You think $42 was bad? You should see what the dealer had to pay for the correct tool. On top of that, he had to buy an extension set to reach the front snap ring in certain gearcases.

I have no idea what your snap ring pliers looks like. But some times you can file a little notch in the tips so when you grab the snap ring it holds it in that notch instead of rolling off. BTDT. JMHO

The factory snap ring pliers is around $200. I made this for $ 10 just bent the tips a little and works well so far but it is on borrowed time.

I have 2 of those sets of monster pliers one with the extension on it.---If you are doing this job just once you should run to a shop.-----Quite a bit of tension on them and safety is a consideration.

As said above, for the cost of the pliers, take it to a shop and have them do it.

No Title

So, for future searches, I though I should keep this updated.
I purchased a GearWrench 82110 Double X Internall Snap Ring Pliers Set, for $42.
Thought these might do the trick. They did not at first.
I flipped the jaws over, and used the blunt end and a lot of strength, and the top ring came right out.

At this point the tips were bent, I rotated them, and tried the bottom ring, which worked even better!

So did they work? Yes.
Easily? No

I found my repair manual.
Says part number of the tool is 0311879 -> 0331045
They are $120. Not really that bad?

Can anyone confirm if this is the correct tool?
