I have a '74 Mercury 150hp. I have those ear muff things...they annoy the hell out of me. I also would like some water over the prop to quiet it down, my neighbors are very close. What do you guys use to submerge our outboard on land? A garbage can wouldn't be big enough would it? I know they sell nice big metal tanks just for this...but one of those probably cost more than my boat. :)

I have seen a widget that locks over the exhaust port in the middle of the prop. It quiets things down, but its main purpose is to give backpressure for tuning purposes. You can check on this website or Overtons or wherever, I forget what it is called. The other option is the big tank o water. You could get one of those livestock watering tanks, they have a drain on the bottom. Just make sure that there is enough water ot come over the cavitation plate so you get a good water supply. Good luck....

Ok since you asked.......

We cut the bottom out of a plastic milk jug. Any pisce of flexable plastic will work. Then cut an X in the center. About 1" x 1". Slip it over the prop shaft. Put the prop back on without the thrust washer. Put the spacer and nut back on just tight enough to push the prop into the plastic and into the exhaust housing.

Instant muffler.

And it creates enough back pressure to be real close to "in the water" conditions.

The neighbors are happy too.

Well, the main reason I want a large amount of water is so I don't have to use the flusher and so I can try out the prop. (I have already had a few problems where it would spin in the air but not in the water)

ZM - A 150 will blow out all the water in most tanks in a heartbeat - unless it were the size of a swimming pool. Best drop it in the nearest body of water for prop testing.

I found a 40 gallon pickle barrel, cut the top off and it fits perfect. So Littles right though, put it in gear and W :D oosh........
