Ok I recently purchased a 1993 bass tracker tx-17 and it came with the tracker 40 johnson on it. The motor ran great when i purchased it. I even started it several times at home on muffs and it ran great. I took it out to the lake about a week ago for the first trip. It started up fine idled good like always took off down the lake ran awesome but didnt go very far because of the fog so i figured i would fish for a bit till it burned off. I started it up about an hour later started good put it in gear and blasted right out of the water. It ran wot about 30 seconds then started surging on me so i backed off on the throttle and it seemed to smooth out but you couldnt open it up. Shut it back down to idle and idle was rough now was smooth before this started so i figured carbs. I rebuilt the carbs twice to specs same thing wont idle now and its very rough and running rich. Doesnt seem like anything you do to the carbs fixes anything. I got to checking around on the wiring connectors one day and found something bad. The plug coming down from stator that has a,b,c,d,e was rubbing against the rectifier and the brown wire was almost rubbed in half and it looks like the wire was arking against the rec body and the other brown/yellow b wire was also rubbing and had a bare spot in it also. So im thinking:mad: my problems that started are from this and not carbs since nothing you do to the carbs changes anything. It does sound like the motor is kinda cutting out at idle maybe one cylinder not sure. Done a spark test nice big blue sparks from each wire. I just keep thinking that that wire rubbing and grounding out like that had to kill the stator or power pack or both. What do you think ?????? I really need some ideas here guys I just want to go fishing in my new boat.......

What do I think???

1. Well, there goes another guy tearing into the carburetors. Most carburetor problems...aren't. But you aren't alone, everybody else makes the same mistake.

2. Certainly, the wire. The brown wire is the one that charges the powerpack to 300 volts. If it shorts out, no powerpack charge, and no spark. That means misfire, not run at all, etc.

Ok I moved the wire so it doesnt short now and the motor still runs the same. Do you think the power pack is bad now or the stator or both. Should i replace them ????? Thanks for any help...... I wish I still had my 25hp mercury it purred like a kitten.....

So did you replace these bad wires or just move them? From your last post, it seems that you only moved them. If I had wires that were almost "rubbed in half" and one that "had a bare spot," I know what I'd be doing...and it wouldn't be just pushing them into a new location.

I just pushed them out of the way to see if that was my problem. That wasnt my solution for the problem. I wanted to see if i stop the wires from grounging to the rec body if the motor work run ok again. If it had I would then cover up the bare wires and go with it. But it didnt fix the problem so now im thinking that something has been damaged from the arking of the wires.
