What do you think of Progressive insurance?

Reading through another thread on insurance got me to thinking about my own insurance and what would happen if I had to file a claim. I've always insured my boats with Progressive. I found it very easy to get the insurance with them, and they're always very accommodating and pleasant to deal with if I need to make any changes. But companies always seem great until they've got your money right?:)

Just wondering if anyone has had a bad (or good) experience filing a claim with them?

Re: What do you think of Progressive insurance?

I haven't had to file a claim on the boat with Progressive yet, but I have filed claims for my auto insurance through Progressive. They've been very accomodating and helpful to say the least. They explain what it will do to my future policy and how it effects me when it's time to renew my current insurance. It didn't cause me to have to raise my rates, but what it did was cause me to not be eligible for renewal "bonuses" or "reductions". My rates stayed the same and my policy states that I have claims filed. But that's just the normal insurance stuff anyways...........it did not effect any of my other policies.

I have home owner's, auto, motorcycle, and boat insurance through Progressive. I've been VERY pleased!

Last august (2009) i hit a rock with my boat, the drive shift was bent, progressive came to my dealer where i dropped the boat off, and did the estimate, and gave a new complete SEI drive. all i piad was the deductible. and i just started the policy 3 weeks prior.

i am happy with them, hopefully they wont raise my rates come july renewal time.

Re: What do you think of Progressive insurance?

I switched to Progressive from Farmers (cars/house) and Foremost (boat) some years ago and saved a good amount of money in the process. I also used their monitoring device which lowered my car and truck rates. What really surprised me is the neat reports you can get from this device and the very fact it is there makes you less prone to speed. I was surprised this spring when Progressive sent a letter indicating I no longer needed to use the device so I could send them both (car and truck) back. My rates are now locked in because of what they saw as my driving habits, trip lengths, speeds, time of day, etc. I have not had a claim to date, but expect no issues should I need to make one.

No personal experience here, but the SeaRay 300 I bought last year has an new port engine and outdrive thanks to Progressive. The previous owner had a bottom strike with the port outdrive, which fried the engine when it lost cooling. Progressive replaced the outdrive with a new Alpha and the 5.7L port engine with a Mercruiser factory rebuild. Engine cost alone was almost $10,000 if I remember correctly.

Horrible, horrible, horrible! One and only time I had to file a claim after hitting a submerged log and they tried every reason they could think of to say the damage was the result of something I neglected. Yeah...I neglected to use the power of the force to tell me that I should know something was floating just the right depth to nail my outdrive! I dumped them immediately after and have been happy ever since. I can understand always being suspicious of someone always trying to rip them off, but I showed them all my maintenance records, had the mechanic call them, offered to take it to a mechanic of their choice, police report proved no alcohol was involved anddue diligence was observed, and for some reason it was still something I should have been able to avoid. No thanks, I'll throw my money away to someone else.

The gal in the commercial is a hottie. I'd go with it. Actually, my motorcycle insurance is through progressive and I'm satisfied.

Re: What do you think of Progressive insurance?

jm, I suspect there is a little more to your claim than you are telling. I doubt that they argued over a impacted lower unit, unless it had hammer beech marks on it. Perhaps there was resulting damage involved in this claim that they were questioning? Or was it merely an ACV issue where you thought you should get a brand new factory outdrive in place of one that was 10 years old? Please tell the whole story, if you are going to say they handled your claim improperly.
You did make one completely truthful and accurate statement, their claims adjusters get LIED to everyday. Probably on every claim, since their core business is "non-standard" auto insurance.

I use them but havent had to make a claim (yeah) is money well spent I think. They have a pretty good reputation and their rates are pretty good. Use them for my cars also and have always used them for my motorcycles.

Re: What do you think of Progressive insurance?

Have used/currently have Progressive for everything (boat, snowmobles, autos) but the house because of their screwy deductible rules for wind/hail if you want a high deductible here in MN. Anyway I have only had a trailer roadside assistance claim which I never heard about again. They are easy to work with though. I once was rearended by a Progressive policyholder. I didn't even bother to report it but the guy who hit me did and Progressive came to my house wrote me a check for a new bumper and a check if I agreed to not sue them for the rear end. Farmers on the other hand...

Does Progressive make you put a GPS on your toys like they do cars?

No GPS required. I've never heard of that before. Seems odd.

I forgot about that. I know you are kidding but like you said they offer it for cars and I am against it. The best was when they automatically included roadside assistance for a fee for my snowmobiles. We have 17,000 miles of snowmobile trails here in MN so no I won't be roadside.

Re: What do you think of Progressive insurance?

to quote

"Progressive Insurance

MyRate is a car insurance program developed by Progressive Insurance in the United States.[5][6] It is a voluntary, behavior-based insurance program that gives drivers a customized insurance rate based on how, how much, and when their car is driven. MyRate is currently available in Alabama, Colorado, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Maryland, New Jersey and Oregon.

Driving data is transmitted to the company using an on-board telematic device. The device connects to a car's OnBoard Diagnostic (OBD-II) port (all automobiles built after 1996 have an OBD-II.) and transmits speed, time of day and number of miles the car is driven. There is no GPS in the MyRate device, so no location information is collected. Cars that are driven less often, in less risky ways and at less risky times of day can receive large discounts. Progressive has received patents on its methods and systems of implementing usage-based insurance and has licensed these methods and systems to other companies. Progressive has service marks pending on the terms Pay As You Drive and Pay How You Drive."

Fortunately I have never had to make a claim with them but they do offer very affordable rates and their customer service saff is very friendly. I think that speaks well of the company thus far.

Doug..... Im ahhhh... not so sure I'd consider Flo a 'hottie', maybe Erin Esurance, but Im not into anime, lol

I have USAA insurance for my cars. Argue with me, but I'll still tell you they're the best.

They quit doing boats and now recommend Progressive.

That being said, I went with BoatUS.

I have been with USAA for 15 years. I .love them. WIfe was an independant agent and never could touch their rates.
If you go through USAA for your insurance it is cheaper even if it is subcontracted out. They have some group buying power. they insure my car/truck in house. home, in house. my auto business sub contracted. motorcycle subcontracted. and boat subcontracted. Guess they love my premiums
