Iboats has it for 341 with shipping, and it has turn by turn directions like the neverlost system, and fishing grounds built into it from what I understand

its a bigger screen too, and works in portrait or landscape modes

that Street Pilot III is nice but way too much, iboats has it for 700

ebay might have a few nearly in the doable range, but I dont think its as marine friendly as the V, and the V can mount on the mountain bike too, saves money on gettin a bike speedometer :p

since the GPS I got was a floor model, I really dont want it anyway, but Ill toss batts in it and put it in a baggie, keep it like new and try it for a few days, see how much I like it (its a garmin legend) IVe heard that the mouse switch breaks easily, and I am ham handed at best

Re: What do you think of the Garmin V GPS?

I got a GPS V for the holidays and haven't been able to stop playing with it since. I love the thing. It's small and light enough to camp/bike/hike with, and the display is large enough to mount on your dashboard. With the software it comes with, you can create routes/maps/waypoints of places you are going. The directions it chooses are usually pretty good ... but sometimes does not pick the best route - but it will always get you there.

Loading maps from the computer to the GPS is a little slow - can take up to an hour but I guess it would be like that with any GPS you buy.

19 megs is a lot of memory - I kind of wish it had more though. I don't really NEED it, but it would be kind of nice to be able to get an entire state on the thing instead of just parts of states.

Ray, I think you're in NJ, right? If it helps, I'm going to South Jersey and Atlantic City this weekend. I have the areas around my house in Virginia on it, A lot of South Jersey, and all of Atlantic City on it and it's full. It already has the base maps of major highways on it so that's all I need. If you were going to drive cross country, you would more than likely want something bigger.

Hope this helps.

Yes it does, and that is excellent! The base map covers the entire country from what I understand, the entire interstate system (with hawaii, never understood that one!) you just fill in the detail areas with the higher density maps

when you get lost the V will even re route you, (if you miss a turn or go see a scenic outlook, the lil bugger keeps churning away, figuring out the best way to go

Mongo Impressed!

Im curious to see if it actually keeps up with driving tho ... if it does, this is a dirt cheap version of Never Lost, that hertz gizmo everyone likes

Ray - I'm headed up to South Jersey in a couple of hours (To Cherry Hill) and I'm going to let my GPS V guide me there and back. I've set Boaters World and West Marine as waypoints too. ;) I'll let you know how it does on my first road trip with it.

I'll tell you what - I almost didn't have to look out the window at all. The GPS V is dead on! Just turn when it beeps!

I don't know how all your Jersey people do it - your roads SUCK. I was trying to get onto 295 and couldn't see the sign because it was small and off to the side but sure enough, the GPS told me to turn and it was right.

I love it!
