Took my boat to a mech for not running wot popping out the carb his conclusion is that timing is correct, carb working fine.He replaced gimble and told me that i have a 1.50 ratio which is for a V8 i have a 4.3 he said to reprop it and it should stop the popping i find it hard to believe it has a 19 pitch on it now......

I knew it was bad and already had one but he came to the conclusion before the gimble bearing...I figured to go ahead and let him replace since i didnt have a slide hammer

Re: What do you think?

I dont think the popping is the drive ratio. I have a 1990 4.3 with the correct drive and she pops at wot. Been troublshooting that one since i bought her :( FYI- you can rent slide hammers at autozone or whatever parts house you have locally.

Re: What do you think?

Yeah, i have a 18p 4 blade prop and my popping starts at 3900. Put my 17p 5 blade and got her to 4400 before the backfire started. Prolly in the mid 30's on the mph.

Re: What do you think?

1. What's a "Gimbal" I know what a gimbal Bearing is, a gimbal ring, and a gimbal housing. But nothing is named a "Gimble".

Anyway, if you have a 4.3, you should have a 1.84 gear ratio, not a 1.50. With a 19P prop, you don't have the proper WOT rpm, but that alone will not cause popping. You most likely have a lean condition, could be from air getting into the fuel system, a bad fuel pump, water in the carb, who knows at this point.
As an example, here is a list of things that cause low WOT rpm, but not all cause popping out the carb. That's fuel delivery problem.

your mechanic is a thief. find a new one, period! popping is not normal nor caused by a gimbal.

I am going to have to assume that you meant gimbal BEARING
