What does 20 hours inspection consist of?

Is the 20 hour inspection on a new motor required?, or is the dealer just looking the motor over for obvious flaws? I do all of my own maintenance as it is, so can I do the 20 hour myself? Thanks for any info.

A 20 hour inspection is not required by the Mercury. Some dealers like the engine to come back in the first 20 hours of service to ensure that the customer is happy with the product and to find out if there has been any problems. Some dealers may charge the customer and some dealers do it as a goodwill.

Should I change the gear oil to remove any metal specks from the gears breaking in? Thanks

SS-that's usually all we do on our customers engines aside from the visual/hands-on inspection and depending on the manufacturer..some re-torquing
