What does a Chartplotter do?

Hi all,

I have been looking at the Garmin GPS 276 type unit as an on and off water solution. To the best of my knowledge we do not have any of our internal waters charted and this is where I spend my time.

Assuming there are no preloaded charts does the chartplotter have any usefulness? If so what? Or shoulf I upgrade my fishfinder?

Thanks
Andrew

Re: What does a Chartplotter do?

i bought a lowrance h2o.

i was also concerned about the charts.......... a gps will still tell you your coordinates and give you an idea where you are. mine is pretty accurate even though i havent spent the extra money for the detailed charts.

the cards and stuff you can buy will give you things like: water depth, marker bouys, river channels, etc.........

i believe the chartplotter is a program where you download/buy maps and set up routes using the charts and your computer.......... but im not sure so dont quote me....... i have only scratched the surface of the technology in my gps and i have had it since last christmas.

my h2o works on land or water......... it has most of the bells and whistles the others have but for a fraction of the cost............ gps/fishfinder combos are outrageously priced
