Hi,
I just spoke to a guy at Larson tech support who told me the anti-siphon valve prevents someone form inserting a hose in my gas tank and siphoning out my gasoline. Is this correct?
Thanks,
John

Absolutely not, John. Cheez!! Some of the lies so-called techies tell just to sound smart.

The anti-siphon valve is in the outlet of your fuel tank to prevent fuel from siphoning back into the tank from the lines and engine.

Larson may have some sort of anti-siphon block in the fuel inlet, but it will not be a valve, it will be a screen and should be called an anti-siphon barrier or block.

EDIT: Posts below contradict this explanation. They are probably correct for many tanks, but not for my portables.

Re: what does the anti-siphon valve do?

Just shows how many don't have a clue ! It is a check valve with a very light spring to prevent fuel from siphoning out of your tank in the event of a fuel hose /line leak filling your boat with gas and going boom at the first open air arc , switches , bilge blower motor brushes , starter solinoid , starter motor brushes . Yes it dosen't make sence that it prevents fuel from coming from your tank but with a mechanical pulsing diaphram pump it opens long enough with the light spring 1# or less to let fuel into the line for the pump to get it to carburator . This is why you can blow back to tank from fuel pump line and it has to be air tight on all plumbing as if you have a leak or air in line it won't pulse it to open to let fuel to pump because it not solid full of fuel and the air in the line compresses and fuel is not deliverid in right amounts because of this . Most common of what people thought the lines were getting vapor locked or boiling gas . From a Senior Master Tech. Electrical , Electronics ,Mechanical ,Hydraulics , Machining ,Mining ,Locomotives ,Cranes , Radio Control , Heavy Equip , Planes ,Trains ,Automobiles but not spelling or typing LOL . Thinking about adding Boats but still learning .

Re: what does the anti-siphon valve do?

I hope i have explained this valve and its fuction to where all could under stand as I preveious only had one in O/B tank line squese ball and since owning a I/O and having problems I have looked at removed ,cleaned , And had hoped a blow job could amost fix everything ! Yes you can take this evalation to the bank/heck with them just spread to fellow boaters . This Valve is almost as misunderstanded as the free flow safety on all propane devices that you will incounter for your safe keeping that saves lifes and skin ! PS not smart just have to take alot of things apart to look before I understand . Now how much would pay ?

Jimbo types too much LOL but he IS correct.... It is a safety feature to keep a broken fuel line from filling the bilge with fuel.

Just don't give up and now becoming fuel oil expert . I can now hold hand lower than heart as fingers and nail cant stop the blower on auto reseting flame safety . Want to see what else cant stop a train ? Also just got new deal for my first I/O boat from experiance on High speed v8 3508 Cat 975Hp Loco engine on Barge work . Can fix alot but not love or stupid Loved the fact that I could sit next to my mercruiser and work on and reach things till alternator fan and shoe lases and eyes couldnt get along . No my local hospital emergency
personal do not know me by first name bases but I do have a favorite coffe cup there ! Work lets me play with the most intresting things
and they pay me ? It helps with hobbies .

Havent figured out yet why Rider mowers and boats come with cup holders but no ash trays ? Heck everybody knows winstons lit and burning cant ingnite gasoline only 600 deg at tip fumes and natural gas inginite with 2X as hot or spark , now would you buy anything but marine grade parts for you boat? Heck only way I find bad ing wires is to lift motor cowl when dark / and watch the light / plasma show
as long as no gas smell .

Is that why my push mower isn't air conditioned? Must just be lazy engineering.....:p

I keep hearing people mention tearing up floors. I'm not an all year, all make, boat expert, but everyone I have ever seen is tank mounted. Am I missing something? Maybe Don can clarify this. I cant imagine a serviceable part buried under a floor.

sure.... put a mityvac on the fuel line.....

Let's start from scratch... what exactly are the symptoms that have you asking about anti siphon valves?

Re: what does the anti-siphon valve do?

When you blow on hose to tank at fuel line it opens and flows and doesnt when no air it closes . It took mine alot of air pressure to do as I think a turkey baster full of fuel would be a safer source to test . Mine was clogged . Checked with vent line to be open and fill cap off . Cation using air pressure as it will only tell you if it will open I could hear perculate /bubble . Later I unplumbed and cleaned proper as it has tight clearence fit on spring that makes it close . O/B s built in squeese ball hand primer . Gosh I hate the taste of gas !!!

Please Don't do that!! Your shop vac does not have proper spark protection (electric motor = sparks). The vapors collected in the tank could explode injuring you.

good of you to be concerned but a mityvac is not a shopvac.... It does NOT have an electric motor...... It does NOT make sparks... It can NOT cause an explosion
EDIT: and soooooo do not use the vacuum cleaner with a similar name ;)

Re: what does the anti-siphon valve do?

Suction on fuel line will climb as check ball held closed by Vcc and spring against ball to prevent siphoning out from hose lower than tank hence Anti name .

one named rex and one named wrecks LOL

like I say... good to be concerned
