Re: What does VRO stand for?

According to the manual I just received for my motor, it stands for variable ratio oil.

Variable Ratio Oiling. The system varied oil distribution dependent on engine load. The range varied from 100:1 (idle) to 50:1 (WOT).

I'm going to editorialize here. I have said it more than once on this board.

1. The OMC oiling system is the most maligned mechanical system, I believe, ever. It has been blamed for everything from sunspots to hangnails.

2. The system is VERY reliable, if maintained.

3. People that do not trust the system are the same ons that would like to rip out the fuel injectors and electronic ignitions from their vehicles and install hand cranks, magnetos and carburetors. Gee, weren't carbs. fun; pumping the accelerator, kicking off the choke and just generally wasting fuel.

About the only maintenance the oiling system needs is to clean it out about yearly. This consists of dumping the old oil (and water) out of the tank and replacing the sock. Refill and prime. Make sure to run 50:1 until oil useage is verified. Make sure all of the connections/hoses are good and viola, you have a great system.

Re: What does VRO stand for?

never blamed it for hangnails nor have I stripped fuel injectors out of late model engines.however ,in my case the vro pump had an internal failure between the fuel and oil portion which caused extremely oil rich condition on start-up.instead of spending 240 bucks for new one I followed advice of four factory trained mechanics at local johnson evinrude dealers and also the advice of clanton and greg lawrence and at least in my case it solved an oil rich condition without altering the overall design of the already carbureted 3 cylinder loop charged motor.I'm sure other oiling systems are more bullet proof than my particular duel function pump design . but i guess you just have to experience it for yourself.

unfortunatly when fuel injectors fail, you don't have a hatched engine. Who wants to wonder all the time if it is working properly? I know I know just mark a line.......etc. I'd rather spend my time fishing than worrying. My vro is doing just fine...on the garage floor.
JMO

G'Day
VRO= Very rarely operates

As a matter of interest in my workshop I have seen in 20 years. 2 failures of oil pumps on Yam, no failures on merc except Autoblend that was dropped in about 1989, and about 6 failures per YEAR with VRO that has led to motor damage.
