Re: What does VRO stand for?
Variable Ratio Oiling. The system varied oil distribution dependent on engine load. The range varied from 100:1 (idle) to 50:1 (WOT).

I'm going to editorialize here. I have said it more than once on this board.

1. The OMC oiling system is the most maligned mechanical system, I believe, ever. It has been blamed for everything from sunspots to hangnails.

2. The system is VERY reliable, if maintained.

3. People that do not trust the system are the same ons that would like to rip out the fuel injectors and electronic ignitions from their vehicles and install hand cranks, magnetos and carburetors. Gee, weren't carbs. fun; pumping the accelerator, kicking off the choke and just generally wasting fuel.

About the only maintenance the oiling system needs is to clean it out about yearly. This consists of dumping the old oil (and water) out of the tank and replacing the sock. Refill and prime. Make sure to run 50:1 until oil useage is verified. Make sure all of the connections/hoses are good and viola, you have a great system.
