Just got the boat. When I get it running it sounds good for a while then it dies. When I try to re start it pops and backfires thru the carb. I pulled the distributer cap off and turned the motor over by hand and noticed that the crankshaft has to turn along ways before the rotor moves.Shouldnt the rotor respond to the crankshaft movement in either direction right away? 1987 Baretta super sport aq131/275

Is the timing belt loose? The pulley that runs the raw water pump also turns the distributor.

I found the problem. I pulled the distributer out of the motor and found that the springs on the mechanical advance are both broken, this lets the rotor move freely. Now off to find a distributer.

Good luck with that. Mine were broken too. A new distributor is listed for $1,500 and the springs are not available anywhere. I looked everywhere. I tried other springs but they are very specific.
I ended up finding a good condition used distributor on Craigslist for $50

Thanks don and trophy for responding. With a bit more investigating I found the real reason for the broken ground up springs. The bolt used to hold the condensor on the side of the distributer was too long and when the thing spun around it wiped out the small tabs that hold the springs on. I remember in the old days we used to change springs and weights in our car distributers to try and get a little more power out of them. I think I can repair the small tabs that the springs are attached to with my welder. I just need to find a few springs to try. As long as I get the proper spark advance or close to it I think I should be ok.

I searched every online source and tried all local springs. They are an odd size. I also checked with Volvo car enthusiasts. The distributor is a Bosch, but nothing matches. With luck you can find a donor dizzy. They are around. Check Ebay. The advance is crucial and you don't want to be off.

There are nylon arbors that fit on the posts, without them I would be afraid of too much advance too quick. JMHO
