My oil pressure has suddenly dropped and, at the same time, my distributor jumps out of timing. Are the oil pump and distributor driven by the same device???

Yes... A gear on the camshaft drives the distributor gear, and the oil pump... The distributors shaft fits directly onto, and turns, the oil pump..

As for whats causing the pressure drop and the timing issue, not a clue.. Could be any one of many things...

Okay... thanks... but you seem to be contradicting yourself???? If the gear on the camshaft gets messed up couldn't that cause the distributor to jump and the oil pump to lose power???????

Just read your other thread.. I'd say have a look at the end of the distributor shaft...

You may have sheared the end off of the distributor shaft... The end of the distributor shaft that fits down onto the oil pump should look like a screwdriver blade..

There is a blade at the end... looks like a very thick screwdriver blade about 1/2 inch long, extended from the shaft??????????

With the distributor out, stick your finger down the hole and feel the camshaft drivegear teeth, I'd suspect some are missing. Please don't turn the motor using the key, do it manually with a wrench.

Try and keep your posts under one thread, easier to follow.

Aldo

Thats how it should look...

You might try to turn the oil pump with a long flat blade screwdriver thru the distributor hole, to see if the pump is turning freely... It should turn smoooooth..

You should also be able to inspect the teeth on the camshaft thru the distributor hole.. Prolly need a flashlight..

I turned the oil pump with a screwdriver and it turned smooth and easy.
I inspected the drive gear teeth and no teeth are missing. The right edge of that gear (towards the front of the engine) is chewed up. About 1/8th of an inch in some spots Some parts seemed recently ground or chipped off
Since the gear is about 3/4" wide I can't see how that would effect the distributor.
I checked that drive gear and it seems to be on the shaft pretty solid.
??????/

Skiph... Been reading some of your other threads.. (got to keep all this together on one thread)

Interesting course of problems... Fuel pump causing noise from broken spring, oil filter change drops oil pressure, timing is now out of wack and won't stay adjusted, cam distriburtor drive gears are chipped, and now no oil pressure..

First, I have a few questions..

When you replaced the fuel pump, were you able to account for all the pieces of the old fuel pumps broken spring?

Have you tried replacing the K&N filter with another new filter (not k&n)?

And, the $100 question, do you have a service manual? ;)

Is it possible that the roll pin that holds the distributors gear is sheared, causing the gear to turn on the distributor shaft?

How badly damaged are the teeth? There's no difference between missing teeth or badly damaged teeth, gunna get slippage.

Quote: "some parts seem recently ground off or chipped off". There it is in that sentence.

Aldo

On your 'other' thread freebeetony mentioned that the distributor may not be seated fully, this can cause the teeth to chip & no oil pressure. Might have been the start of your problem.

Aldo
