Re: What else, while the O/D is off?
I have no history of the boat other than it was parked in saltwater during the summer months.
When I had found it, the prior owner had not winterized it and things cracked over the winter. It had already been to a marina to be checked out. The engine had already been taken apart and O/D had been removed for inspection. Basically, I bought it as a basket case project. I have had the boat for almost 2 years and I believe it had sat for a year prior to that in the disassembled state while the owner decided what to do with it.
The inside of the boot did not look rusty or milky, and the u-joints were the same way. No signs of rust and they felt smooth. I spun the gimble bearing by hand before putting the o/d back on and it felt smooth. Prior to putting the o/d back on I hit the side zerk fitting with a few shots of grease and watched it push through the seams, and everything seemed fine.
Took the o/d back off at the shop after the trip to the lake and spun the gimble bearing again by hand, it is very rough and course. You can definitely hear and feel the noises in the bearing.
On a side note, I started the engine and broke the cam in without the o/d on the boat so there was no engine drive time on the bearing.
Is there a tool ?kit? available for the Volvo Penta Gimble bearing replacement? I will order the engine alignment bar but would like to order the other tools at the same time.
