What engine is this? And how to repair?

Hey everyone, there was a boat abandoned on my property and I was wondering what kind of engine is this and are there any good tutorials on how to repair and rebuild boat engines? I am pretty handy with small machines but have never rebuilt an engine. I have not tried starting it and know absolutely nothing about boats.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

It looks a lot like this engine:

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... It's either a 302 Ford, or a 351 Ford... It's rebuilt just like any other Ford motor...

I'd probably start by seein' if she'll Light up, 'n run...
It probably needs a new set of points 1st though...

Thanks for the help. And one more thing, is it okay to run the engine on land without water? I am assuming the engine is cooled with sea water but I was wondering for the purpose of just starting it up and possibly rebuilding it would it be okay to start it and run it for brief periods on land?

Take the belt off the raw water pump that pumps the water through the engine (I assume it's a belt driven pump, can't see the front of the engine), and don't run it for more than 10 or 15 seconds or you will start burning up those rubber hoses on the exhaust. They are water cooled, just like the engine.

it's in a boat but 90% or so of that engine is very similar to what you'd find in cars in the 70's or 80's. some of it has been changed to protect from sparks...carb, alternator, starter. other changes are to handle water cooling...exhaust manifolds & risers, intake pump.

at the bottom right of your picture, the 2" black hose above the 4" exhaust hose, that's your water intake. for about $10 and 20 mins in home depot you can make an adapter for your garden hose. disconnect the 2" water intake and connect your garden hose to cylinder looking transmission cooler. this will let you run it on land without worrying about overheating things.

there's a water pump on the front of the engine with a rubber impeller in it. it's probably toast by now. you'll want to get a new one before you run that engine for more than the 10-15 seconds Don mentioned.
