I have just acquired a Johnson outboard. I have searched it diligently and can find no model or serial numbers anywhere. It is a 3 cylinder with electric shift. The cowling has Stinger on it( dont know if it is original)there is no horsepower stated on it anywhere. I would like to acquire a manual as forward will not engage. Any info would be appreciated.

Re: What engine is this?

The first E/J 3 cylinder motors were 55 hp's in 1968 and 69. In 70 and 71 they were 60 hp's. In 1972 they were 65's. These years had hydro-electric lower units. They are very different than an electric shift. The motor should be in forward gear until the motor is running and neutral or reverse is selected on the shift control.

IE -- with the motor not running, the lower should be in forward gear regardless of where the shift selector is and whether the key is on or not.

Good luck!
