looks like an early 2.5 liter wiht an aftermarket heat exchanger. look on the side of the block under the manifold. it will be cast in either 153 (number of cubic inches) or 3.0

is this a boat you are looking to buy, or a boat you already own.

if you are looking to buy it, there appears to be lots of neglect and you can guarantee the hull will be rotten.

so consider the boat a project

My concern also, but had the owner of a marine business check it out for me and he says the hull and transom are solid. Got it cheap and expect a motor overhaul and the rest of the cosmetic stuff all of which I will do.

That looks like an older 2.5 vs a newer 3.0. Not sure what year it is, but I guessing 70s , likely a MC1 outdrive with it? If the rest of the boat is good and the engine needs an overhaul, I think you’d be best to find a rotten hull with a good 3.0 and newer aloha gen one or gen two (or complete tear out) and swap it all out pulleys to prop.

that is what I’d like to do. It’s a matter of getting it home to get working on it.

Might be wrong, but I’ve never seen a Mercruiser exhaust like that. But admittedly, the oldest 3.0 4 cylinder I’ve had was a ‘79 3.0 140.
seen, but not owned a few 3.0 OMC with a very similar exhaust riser though.

Look at the valve cover says mercruiser on it. Also it’s painted black the usual merc color. OMC was grey

Yours right of course Scott. Wouldn’t be the first time that we have seen a VP/Merc/OMC swap fest of bits and bobs on a 3.0 though. Seen plenty of red and black paint mixed up on lots of GM engines...haha.

Ran across this probably needs at minimum a valve job. volvo penta aq140 with matching 280 leg, guy "thinks" its a 2005. That sound about right?

1985 maybe ...I don’t think Volvo made that red block engine Or the 280 outdrive in 2005. 1995 was the last year those engines were put in old rwd Volvo cars ....

also the transom hoke on the 280 is bigger than what you have and would require modification in addition to possible engine mount mods.

Ayuh,...... No way it's that new,......

That motor has been outa production for decades,......

Atleast you can still buy parts for the I-4 GM motors, unlike that Volvo,.....

the motor and drive are about 1985-1988 at the newest, however I am going with earlier than 1986

the 280 went away about 1988

the drive shift cover and transmission changed in 1989

fetch

many parts for the motor are NLA (No Longer Available)

lets back up.

you obviously are looking to buy a boat.

keep in mind, any fiberglass boat under $10k is a project. (used to be $5k, however this whole covid thing has people buying boats left and right, and last years junk is fetching $5k from un-suspecting buyers)

try to buy a boat that is under 15 years in age. boats have a design life of 15 years and are intended to be replaced. after 15 years, wood in the structure is rotten, the soft surfaces (upholstery) need to be replaced and the major systems may need serious work.

try to buy a boat that was wiped down with a cloth diaper, meticulously cleaned and maintained, and that resided in the garage while the owners cars sat outside.

Hey! I'm offended. My '76 Sea Ray SRV200 is cherry. Rebuilt floor and stringers, new engine all less than three years ago. She is twice as solid as any newbie. I doubt if I could get $4,000 on the market--just too old. But I gaurantee it will run another 20+ years.
