what f.f. is good

I had an old plane jane eagle f.f. on my boat. Worked great until it started to interfere with my vhf. I threw it out and installed a used cheapo hummingbird. Took the boat out and at or above about 15mph I got readings of 238 ft or more while in 6 feet of water. When going slow it worked fine. The eagle worked no matter what speed I was going. Do I need to adjust the transducesor or something. Or do I need to buy a better f.f. I don't want to spend too much, but I like knowing when traveling at 40mph when I'm getting into shallower waters.

I don't think I would be depending on a fishfinder while going 40 MPH that shallow water is approaching.

Except for adjusting the transducer so it shoots straight down, there is no other adjustment. It either works or it doesn't. And like Bruce says, at 40 MPH your locator depth indication going shallow will only serve to warn you of the impending crash. There is no way you can react fast enough to avoid a steep reef or bar at 40 mph if you rely solely on the locator.

I realize that it won't help if the terrain changes dramatically, but it's nice to see how deep or shallow the water is becoming while underway.

Angle the rear of the transducer up slightly and try it again.

...or if you just entered an underwater forest.

'ducer might need to be a tad lower...is it even with the bottom of the boat and parallel with the waterline? Long time ago had the humminbird econo model...worked just like yours. Switched to eagle 320, love it.

mounting location is critical if you want it to work at higher speeds.
It needs to be in clear water with no bubbles or interference from the hull.

i have the prianah 20 and have no problems at 45 mph. mount even with the hull. serves my purpose, also makes me mad when i can see the fish, and they don't bite.
