I have the in dash HB I think it is HDR600 or something. It locks all the time at speed. I just put it on a rocker switch so I can shut it off and use my Garmin FF. I'll use the in-dash for the times I forget the FF

Anybody got a Interphase scanning sounder? How do you like it?

Don’t have it…yet…but looked at it, played with it. Been waiting for their new transducer with more elements that follows the new color display. They are supposed to be available now. Not that I want a color display but they are adding NMEA 0183 for networking of the Twinscope. The monochromatic TwinScope was stand-alone only.

They use a 200mHz phased array, claiming 800fsw depth and 1200fsw forward ‘visibility’ but I don’t know.... they are only pushing 400w but supposedly that is appropriate given the combination of phasing and their software.

For those that are not familiar with Interphase Tech, they make phased array (scanning) sonar, same idea as phased array radar, but in the water. :)

The Probe looks down, scans front to back
The Outlook looks forward, scans vertically
The SeaScout looks forward, scans horizontally
The Twinscope is the Probe and Outlook combined

Hi guys,

I don't think all HB modles are bad.. just the lower end ones like the Wide 100 or 1SX..

The transducers seem to have a very narrow beam and are too sensitive to angle changes..

for example, if my offsider stands at the back of the boat, the finder works, if he takes 2 steps forward.. it stops.. if I adjust it so it works when he is in the middle and he steps back then it stops again..

you get the idea.. and forget using them if you want to use the depth alarm and you go over 5knots cos it will drop straight out at any speed.

for all I know the upper end hummingbirds are much better.. but the low end one's suck.. I've never met anyone that has a bigger boat (more then 16 foot I mean) and goes over 5-10knots who has been particulary happy with a wide 100.

rgds

Franki
