I am new to boating (just bought my first boat last summer). I want to add a GPS/FishFinder combo to the boat. My budget is $600 (including transducer/gps). My fishing is mostly in 20'-100' of water in Lake Erie (Buffalo, NY area) and similar conditions in the Upper Niagara River.

Two units I am considering are:

HumminBird 580 Combo: 580 Combo

HumminBird Matrix 97 Sonar:Matrix 97

I would need to add the GPS receiver to the Matrix 97. 580 has everything included. Are there any other comparable items I should be looking at?

Re: What FishFinder/GPS for Lake Erie?

I just picked up a Humminbird 797c2 w/NAV for $799 from Cabelas but I see they are available for $699 elsewhere now. So far I like the unit...

GPS is decent, NAV maps are for 2006 but thats fine for Buffalo - Lake Erie (my fishing grounds). There are some decent deals to be had on last years models and since i am not a pro that works for me.

Not sure if its allowed but posting it anyways...

https://humminbird.factoryoutletstore.com seems like they have decent pricing.
