Based on advice obtained on the web, I have decided to use an anchor float in lieu of a free fall windlass because I have had less than joyful experiences with a "Powerwinch :) . Anchor floats sell for $75 and I just ordered all of the components necessary to make one my self for $45 from Defender on the web (including a Windline FR-1 anchor ring which Defender specil ordered for me at considerable savings over other's catalog price).

Re: What Free Fall Anchor Windlass is Recommended

My boat when purchased came with a Powerwinch. The second season with the boat I experienced major problems with the windlass. When I contacted Powerwinch they would not help with the problem or provide any information on parts or service since the windlass was now considered obsolete.

I installed a Simpson-Lawrence Horizon 900 as a replacement. Unfortunately I had a problem with this windlass, but the good news is Lewmar who now handles the line replaced the windlass in 1 week.

My vote would be for a windlass from the Lewmar group. They stand behind thier product.
