What gauge Battery cable ?

what is the correct gauge battery cable both pos and neg from the starting battery directly to the motor -

also - is there supposed to be some type of "rubber grommet" to seal out the water into the cowl - where the battery cables and the wiring harness goes ?

My motor is a 9.9 Merc 4 stroke standard with elect start / remote steer.

different question
i called mercury who said for less than 8 feet you can use 8 gauge, over that up to 16 feet use 6 gauge.

now... until I get marine 8 gauge - any problems you know of if I get 8 gauge home depot wire - for freshwater boating - will I have a problem for any reason for a month or less ?
