what gear lube do i need.

hello everyone
i just picked up a 71 or a 72 50 hp evinrude model model 50172s and would like to know what type of gear oil do i need to use. any help would be great. thanks in advance.

50172S=1971 50hp.
It looks like it has an electric shift lower unit, you MUST use type "C" lower unit oil or it will not shift properly.

Model 50172 ia a 1971 50hp Johnson.

Gearcase requires "Premium BLend", also known as "Type C", available at your dealership.

50172 is a 1971 50 HP.
It has a hydro-electric gearcase and will use Type "C" marine gear oil.

OK, I'll type something different.

You can also use Pennzoil Multi Vehicle ATF.
