That's an interesting note from Admin5 about "many" people getting banned from this board who had contributed for a long time for using innappropriate language or images because of complaints from "many" concerned users. I have obviously been reading the wrong posts because I haven't seen or read anything off-side lately. I believe in freedom of expression and tolerance on these kind of boards, but I would also like to figure out if I agree with these decisions. So, does anyone know where or roughly what these offending posts were about(obviously don't repeat them!!)?

Re: What happened?

Wow! I havent seen any of that either. I realize some folks get anxious (understandable) about replies but I think they cool off fairly quickly.

I did notice a few strange posts in JB's "Suggestions" thread (not his - dont remember who wrote them) but they really didnt make sense to me.

I thought for the most part we were all playing nice.

Re: What happened?

I went back and read it thru, and changed a couple things..Kinda been bugggin me anyhoo...Like the post said, "Pain makes you do and say things that are waaaay outta character".
I hope I didn't offend anyone...Obviously not yet, as I can still post. But just wanted to appologise if anyone took offence to it.
Yes, that thread of tips for beginers got waay loose. There were two guys there that kinda had an out-of-body" experiance

Re: What happened?

I think a total ban may be too harsh but if Admin feels they need to be dealt with then so be it.

Personally, I have not read too many posts that were not in a gentleman (gentleperson) spirit. I have at times just sat at my keyboard and shook my head at foolish posts or responses.

We all enjoy this board and it's wealth of information shared.

As a closing message to those who may have been banned I sincerely hope you read this. Send Admin an e-mail and agree to abide by the "rules".
Fiarly simple rules at that.

If you insist on fighting or ignoring the rules I guess we no longer need your input.

United we stand.

Bob :)

Re: What happened?

Hello, Landon, (Forums Administrator) I have not seen your name before, maybe you could introduce yourself? How long have you been closely following this board?

I would like to submit my opinion, and say that there will always be a few "squeaky wheels" in the group (the complainers) Your move seems heavy handed to me. I would like to think that you gave these posters a warning before Banning them? maybe even a little group concensus?

Feels pretty Big Brotherish to me. I just dont see any flagerant fouls out there to justify your move. Just my .02

PS: If you all, dont see me posting anymore, its probably because my post was too inflamatory to "several" members and I have been banned.

Count me as surprised, later, Mike

Re: What happened?

I just don't know evin300. All that talk about chainsaws an smellin' fresh cut wood an ripping out rotten transoms an stringers an stuff like that just made me, made me, made me, I don't know, nervous or jittery or goose-bumpy or something. It's so, so, violent! (hehehe)

c/6

Hooty

Re: What happened?

I seem to miss all the good stuff. Maybe it was blocked or edited before we could read it? :p

Re: What happened?

I can only guess it was the JB party thread that
has some people up in arms.... didn't bother me,
but don't think this is the place to post such
things. I enjoy some humor here, but some folks
take it a bit too far. I have personnaly heard
enough about the Dung-Poo masters. I think it
would be better to download instant messanger
and keep the personal chat just that, personal.
imagine logging in for the first time and reading
that post without prior knowledge that it was a
prank.... might drive away people. this is a
business and has to be kept on a professional
level. of course that's just my opinion, I could
be wrong!

Re: What happened?

I have not seen anything that I would consider offensive but that could be only my take on things.

Instead of banning these individuals right off the bat, maybe a stern e-mail advising them to correct their behaviour or manorism may have been more appropriate.

If you had already done so, I take back my 2 cents worth.

This is why I sent Admin5 an e-mail last week suggesting that there should be atleast one moderator per forum to ensure that anything that may be considered distasteful to some could be rectified before things got out of hand.

Lets keep the forums clean and keep this board running smooth.

Dymo

I would be interested in more details as to what is considered 'crossing the line', since I may have been involved :)

I wish the best for everyone here. :D

Re: What happened?

Hi Everyone!

I see that my little note has generated quite a bit of discussion. I've decided to take some time to clear some things up.

First of all, I would like to introduce myself, since I have been pretty silent in my administration duties up to this point. I took over the administration of these boards from Admin5 about five months ago. I didn't feel the need to have any fanfare about it, so I didn't bother to change it from saying "Moderated by Admin5" to "Moderated by Landon". Mostly I just answer technical support questions for users who are having trouble with posts, etc.

But I also deal with member concerns about content that is in the forums. This is what prompted my little message that was seen yesterday and today.

We don't expect all member posts to read like an instruction manual. We encourage our members to joke around, and to have fun. I mean, what's the point of boating if all the fun is removed? Joking, horsing around and having fun is fine. And I know that there is always "gray-area" between what is acceptable and what is not.

However, my message yesterday was not directed at members who like to joke around and who may have posted a joke that was a little "off-color". It was directed at those irresponsible few who post things so blatantly objectionable that no one can honestly mistake them as "gray-area".

The complaints I referred to in my message had to do with members who are linking to pornographic content, using strong profanity and vulgarity and referring to other members in degrading terms. This is not "gray-area" material and a blatant disregard for public decency.

I don't want any of you to get the idea that I am going to start banning people from the boards just because I don't like something they said. This isn't a witch hunt. I just wanted to give a little heads up to members to be on the lookout for anything that is highly objectionable. If you see something that you know good and well does not belong in a family oriented site, let me know.

I hope this answers your questions. If you have anything further, you can post it here or contact me directly at boards@iboats.com

Re: What happened?

Well, I guess I missed the offending stuff -- sounds like it was out of bounds.

Mellowyellow's post (above) pretty much captures my point of view, for what it's worth. Humor is a risky thing. I would add that politics is dangerous territory as well. I like both, but my preferences might set your teeth on edge (or not). But I think it's probably better to stick to repairing Evinrudes, and be pretty careful when getting off topic.
