what happens if timing is off

Lets say the timing of the cams to crank shaft is 180 out on a 115hp merc four stroke outboard. What damage will happen?

If it is a interference engine you can get bent valves and piston damage

did it make bad noises? or lock up?

no noises or lock up but the marina said there were bent valves hard to believe with no noises or lockup.
