What have I Got?

Long story but I have inherited a Mercruiser 188 hp motor complete with stern drive. Appears in really good condition. Serial Number is 3974865 with the Stern Drive #4011477. I understand this to be a Ford 302. Any pitfalls with the motor I need to be aware of. Is it common, a dinosaur, etc? If I was to dump it, what price would be fair?

I apologize in advance if this is not the right forum in which to post this message.

Any replies would be appreciated.

It's better known as an 888 if it has a 2 barrel carburetor. It is a Ford 302 V-8. They were used from 1971-1977. I wouldnt say it was REAL common, but it's not extinct either. There are a few guys on the forum still running them.

They are good, reliable motors.....
Is it a closed cooled system or raw water cooled?....:)

For some reason that motor/outdrive combination does not do near as well on resale value as does Mercruiser/Chevy/GMC combinations.

Re: What have I Got?

Appreciate the responses already. I am going to show my further ignorance by stating that I don't know if it is a closed or raw water cooling system.

This complete engine was left in a warehouse I own and just needing to figure out the best way to handle the resale/disposal thereof and hopefully recoup some of the money I have lost already.

I am a hot rodder mostly with Chevy set ups so what I know about 302's could fill a thimble.
