I have a 72' longshaft evinrude 25hp #25253r. Never could understand what is suppose to lock this motor in the upright position. I have used a piece of wood in the past to keep the motor from falling back down. Can't see where or if it is missing any linkage. Any suggestions.

Go to shop.evinrude.com and look up the parts diagrams on your mtr. Then compair them with your mtr.

they had some really odd set-ups; I remember some 9.9's of that vintage that involved the gear shift. My old 1963 always had a hammer handle although it seems to have some levers up in there.

The 1972 25hp did not have any lock to hold the motor up. Just friction, adjustable to a degree by tightness of the tilt pivot bolt nut. For trailering, most people use a piece of wood. The non-redneck way is a "transom saver", available right here at iboats.

Dang it F_R, I forgot about just the friction holding it up. Thanks for the reminder. And I still like the "Red Neck" way. LOL
