What hp and year is my engine??!

Hello to all that have helped answer many questions. I aquired a boat and engine from my parents and in the process have come to realize that most of what my step-dad 'knew' about the engine was wrong. <br /><br />I thought I had a 1965 90hp merc ob. I do know it's a Mercury Outboard and that it's an inline 6. My serial number is: 1893115<br /><br />What I don't know is the year and hp. <br /><br />I found this page online which shows it to be a 1965 90hp. http://www.oldmercs.com/1965merc900.htm <br /><br />However, now found another listing at http://www.maxrules.com/graphics/merc_pdf/merc_page32.pdf that shows my engine may be a 1966 95 hp. <br /><br />CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME? I'm having a lower end rebuilt for me (right now) with a 90hp gear ratio! <br /><br />My manual does not have serial numbers listed in it. THANKS!

The 1966 950 serail numbers started at 1896776, they also had a silver band not just lettering

Laddies, do you think that if I use a lower unit with a 90hp gear ratio, that will be a problem (since it's really a 95hp)?

I don't think it will hurt a thing, in fact they are probably the same I can't remember for sure, I not at the shop were I can look either, the way I remember the 90 has 2 dogs for rev. and the 95 had 3. If Clams is out there maybe he can remember--Bob

What's scary to me is the my engine casing has '90hp' on it (not 95hp). I guess I'll HAVE to conclude that the SN really is true to what my engine is...
