I am about to buy a prop and do not want to get this wrong.. I do not know what hp my motor is. Its either a 150 or 175. Guy listed it as a 150, went to pick it up, tells me its actually a 175. Serial number on it says its either a 1986 150 or 175. He said it was an 89. Really mixxed up here..Is there anyway to look at the powerhead and tell a difference..? And also, do these motors redline at 5500 or 6000 rpm? I heard black max did 6000 and regular was only 5500, then I heard black max was same motor, just a marketing ploy. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: What HP is my motor..?

If it's serial numbered a 1986 then that's the only year it is. The block number on a 150 should be 858-8711A9 or a 175 should be 858-8712A39 or 858-8134A3. All V/6s run in the neighborhood of 5800 WOT. Black Max was a name that Mercury labeled all early V/6s with so that means nothing.

Justin, my son that works at a mercury dealer ran your block number in the were used section and the parts identifier site at Fond du Lac and it comes back as a unidentifiable number. When you find out what it is let me know.
