Well I have finally gotten my 79 Sea Ray SRV 200 boat restored and back on the water after 10 years with a lot of help from this forum and its' members...Thank you all! I may want to take this boat out on the Gulf of Mexico as I live near the Houston area. With that in mind I think that it would be a good idea to put a kicker on it just in case the Mercruiser 898 has a mechanical problem. What size kicker would be appropriate? I was thinking maybe a 15 or 20 hp, is that in the ball park and what kind of mount would you recommend?

An Evinrude / Johnson 9.9 or 15 2-stroke on a Garelick retractable mount. If you want new, a Mercury 4-stroke 15 with a larger mount built for the higher weight.

Higher HP will not buy you anything.

Thanks JimS123, this boat weighs 3500 to 4000 lbs. so a 10 to 15 hp would work? My SRV 200 is an I/O so a 4 stroke would be better as I would tie into my under deck fuel tank to run the kicker. All the newer 2 strokes have oil injection though right? So that shouldn't be a problem with a 2 stroke, when I was boating as a youngster we had to add oil to the fuel.....old school, I haven't had any experience with oil injection.

The only modern 2 stroke in the kicker range is an Evinrude 15, and it's a very large and heavy 15, runs great, just big and heavy. Any high thrust motor in the 8-9.9 range will work great, but the regular models will work well too.

I started with a 4 stroke 15 hp Nissan for the fuel reason you listed, but just too freakin heavy. I now have a 9.8 Merc and much more manageble. Ihave the space for a 3 gall tank. If your srv is like our 74 19' we ised to keep a six gal under the jump seat.

Is the Merc 9.8 a 2 stroke then and did it do OK pushing the 19 foot Sea Ray? Should I get a long or short shaft outboard?

It is a two stroke and it wasn't on the sea ray. We never had one on it. I will be putting it on the carver soon.

That said, dads last boat was a 25 sea ray sundancer cruiser, and he had a 6 hp two stroke on it. He trolled with it as well as one time we broke down and it pushed us back to the dock in light wind without a problem. Took a few hours but did the job.
