With the help of 3 friends we removed the big old elm tree from my front yard with out damaging the house or neighbors mail box. I rented a pull behind man lift that went about 40' up and with a little wind the pucker factor was high at times (I dont care for heights.) with the help of about a few barley pops kevin said that thing didnt move hardly at all. I managed to tweak my ankle somehow and I am glad I bought the insurance on the lift cause we had a big limb not fall where we thought it would and it dented in a fender. when some of those limbs fell the whole ground would shake. I need to find some one with a really big saw to cut the trunk our 16" stihls wont touch it. its about 5-6' across. here is a link to the pictures

jimr, that is a huge elm you guys cut down I had to cut a willow down that ran right across our septic tank because I had to have it pumped and the root that went across was 2 feet thick. The neighbours did not want me to cut down because it gave them shade when they washed there cars so they all had a tree cut down party when I did cut it down. They had it on my porch and it only cost me about 4 cases of beer I only let them help me thur the first case then they finished the beer. I saw the photos of the trunk you have left it is huge but if you get a new chain on that saw and wedge cut that thing it will fall. Just be carefull those things weigh a ton or two.

I don't burn wood but the guy that helped me does and he also sells wood as a side job. whoever wants it can take it I wanted to get it down before we had another ice storm and had more limbs fall on the house. today we are going to finish cleaning up the yard and go from there. oh yeah today i'm sore I'm not used to that much physical labor.

My experience has been that the fibers and strands of elm are so interwoven that splitting is almost impossible. Most folks around here burn the smaller stuff and dump the larger stuff.

Actually splits fine! Here is the secret.....at this time of the year it is frozen and frozen elm splits easier. I agree on the fibers and we just leave the chunks till winter.

Well, I just learned something. However, we don't have nearly as many freezing days as you do in VT so we'll have to pick our elm-splitting days more carefully.

you might be able to sell the bigger part of the trunk, if it is more then 10 feet...

My neighbor has a tree service anything bigger then 8 inches and 10 feet he can sell for lumber, a big tree he can 2-3 thousand for.

He does not tell the home owners this, he has a large log truck with a grapple, so he can transport the tree himself to the saw mill.

2 to 3 thousand?? for lumber?? they must be pretty efficient at cutting it up just right... I can't imagine getting that much for the dimensional lumber it would produce.

Good hardwood logs are in demand and fetch about $800.00 per 1000 board ft.
People here can afford to to sell firewood except from the scraps or punky wood.
