I have a 90 hp mariner and i was thinking that if I had a tach (any tach will work) if i can hook wires up right. another words making my own wiring harness. get some connectors that will hook up to the prongs inside my control panle and wiring it to the tach. as long as I have power with and ground and gray for signal from stator, it might work!! what do yall think??

I just did this to my 1980 90hp merc, should work fine. Make sure your wire won't rub and wear through, or it may ground out and kill your rectifier, or start a fire. It was pretty exciting getting my tach to work!

You need to use a marine tach suitable for use with a stator. An automotive tach will not work.

What controller do you have? Most have the tach connections already wired in there. You just need the proper tach harness to run from the control box to the tach.

Re: what if...

so another words I need to just come off the pocket and buy a tach for marine use only?! I have acess to a bone yard/ junk yard, so it may be an auto or boat or tractor or anything else, i figured if it didn't have a tach cable that turned inside and worked of electric wiring it might work.

Most automotive tachometers run off the ignition. Marine tachometers run off the alternator (stator)

hope it helps

Ayuh,... As Noted,.. NO, you need a tach that reads the signal used, which is very different that the 1s you'll find in the junkyard...
Even an I/O tach won't work on an Outboard...
