Ok quick break down, im a horse shoer by trade so im not real smart to begin with... i got a 1982 25 hp manual start, F N R on handle, looks like new, Great compression ... i know nothing about boat engines and im trying to fix this one, lol are ya with me so far ? ok i have no spark to either plug i pulled the fly wheel chasing bad wires and sure enough i found some.. the Points look to be in very good condition im no mechanic should i change them or not ?

Also i fixed to wires on it that looks like it is part of the reason why im not getting spark two wires that connect to the side of the engine on terminals and the other ends go to something that looks like a relay that was mounted under the flywheel the wires goin into it are no good, what is this part.... it looks like a relay a small black box about 3/4 inch by 3/4 inch and has a plastic ring that fits around the shaft the fly wheel sits on.... would a pic help ? not sure how to post a pic but i can send one to an email if anyone has any ideas ...... thanks in advance guys

Re: What in the world is this part called

i just have been working on my 1997 mercury outboard, but with a total different problem, but noticed i have the same thing under the flywheel, i believe you should have one for each cyclinder (lets assume two). attatched to the flywheel there should be two magnets. when the magnet passes over this part you have, it does something for the coils to create the spark. Im not a boat mech by any means. But they could be called a magnetic pick-up. Also i think the ring that is attached to it allows it to be rotated a little bit for advancing the timing when you advance the throttle. Just kind of a guess however, maybe some one can conferm this. hope this helps.
